A rolled ankle on the footy field, a sore shoulder after swimming, or a hamstring that keeps tightening during a run should not be managed by simply pushing through the pain. Effective sports injuries management starts with understanding what tissue has been overloaded, how the injury is affecting movement, and what the body needs before training resumes.
For Perth athletes, gym-goers and weekend competitors, the aim is not just to feel better for the next session. It is to reduce pain, restore movement, rebuild confidence in the injured area and lower the chance of the same problem returning.
Sports injuries management starts with the right assessment
Sports injuries are not all the same. A sudden calf strain during a sprint needs a different approach from long-term Achilles tendon pain, a stiff golfer’s back, or shoulder irritation that has gradually built up from swimming or weights. The location of pain matters, but so do the mechanism of injury, swelling, strength, range of movement and the activities that aggravate it.
A hands-on assessment looks beyond the painful spot. Knee pain, for example, may be influenced by tight quadriceps, weak hip control, restricted ankle movement or a sudden increase in running load. Neck and shoulder pain in a cyclist may come from posture on the bike, training volume, tight chest muscles and poor recovery between rides.
This is why generic massage or complete rest is not always the answer. Rest can settle an irritated injury in the short term, but too much inactivity may leave tissues weaker and less prepared when sport resumes. Treatment needs to match the stage of injury and the demands of the sport.
Know when an injury needs urgent medical care
Massage and rehabilitation can be valuable for many muscular and soft-tissue injuries, but they are not suitable as a substitute for medical assessment when serious injury is possible. Seek urgent medical attention after a major collision, obvious deformity, inability to bear weight, severe or worsening swelling, numbness, weakness, unexplained calf swelling, chest pain, or suspected fracture or dislocation.
A sudden pop followed by instability, a complete loss of function, or pain that is severe at rest also needs proper assessment. Do not try to massage through these signs. Early diagnosis can prevent further damage and guide the right treatment plan.
The early stage: protect the injury without shutting down
In the first days after an acute injury, the priority is to avoid making it worse. This may mean reducing running, jumping, heavy lifting or the movement that caused the pain. It does not always mean doing nothing. Gentle, pain-limited movement is often useful where appropriate, particularly once serious injury has been ruled out.
With a fresh sprain or strain, direct deep pressure over a hot, swollen or highly tender area may be unsuitable. Treatment may instead focus on surrounding muscle tension, gentle movement, circulation, comfortable positioning and advice on modifying activity. The goal is to calm the area while maintaining as much normal movement as the injury allows.
Pain is useful information, but it is not always a simple stop signal. Mild discomfort during rehabilitation may be acceptable depending on the injury, while sharp pain, increasing swelling, limping or pain that worsens after activity usually means the load is too high. The response over the following 24 hours is often more useful than how the injury feels in the moment.
Remedial massage for sporting injuries
Once the acute stage has settled, remedial massage can help address the muscle guarding, stiffness and altered movement patterns that often develop around an injury. A strained hamstring may leave the glutes, lower back and opposite leg working harder. An ankle sprain can change walking and running mechanics, creating tight calves, sore knees or hip discomfort.
Sports massage and deep tissue techniques may be used to reduce excessive muscle tension and improve tissue mobility. Myotherapy-oriented treatment, positional release, acupressure and carefully selected stretching techniques can assist where muscles are restricted or protective spasm is limiting movement. Cupping may be appropriate for some clients, although it is not a treatment for every injury and may not suit sensitive or bruised tissue.
The value of massage is practical: it can reduce pain, help restore comfortable movement and make rehabilitation exercises easier to perform correctly. It should not be treated as a quick fix that replaces strength work, sensible training loads or medical care when required.

Rehabilitation is where lasting recovery is built
A pain-free day does not automatically mean an injury is ready for full sport. The injured tissue needs gradual exposure to the movements and forces it will face. For a runner, that may include walking, easy jogging, hills and then faster efforts. For a tennis player, it may mean rebuilding shoulder control before serving at full pace.
A sensible rehabilitation plan progresses through three broad stages. First, restore comfortable range of movement and reduce irritation. Next, rebuild strength, control and tolerance to load. Finally, practise sport-specific movements at gradually increasing intensity.
For example, an ankle injury may require ankle mobility work, calf strengthening, balance exercises and controlled hopping before a return to cutting, jumping or uneven ground. A shoulder injury may need work on upper-back mobility, rotator cuff strength and shoulder blade control before heavy pressing, swimming or throwing resumes.
The exact exercises depend on the injury. Tendon pain often responds best to carefully progressed loading rather than aggressive stretching. A muscle strain needs progressive strength through an increasing range. Joint injuries may need stability, balance and movement retraining. If symptoms persist, worsen or repeatedly return, further assessment is needed rather than simply adding more massage.
Training load causes many avoidable setbacks
Many sports injuries are not caused by one dramatic moment. They develop when training load rises faster than the body can adapt. A sudden return to social sport, extra gym sessions, a new running program, harder hills, poor sleep or a physically demanding work week can all contribute.
Keep an honest view of your total load. This includes sport, gym training, work, gardening, time on your feet and recovery. A warehouse worker who plays football twice a week may have a very different recovery capacity from someone with a desk-based role, even if both follow the same training program.
Increase one variable at a time where possible. If distance has gone up, do not also add speed sessions and heavy leg training in the same week. Build in easier days, prioritise sleep and eat enough to support activity. Persistent stiffness that settles with a warm-up may be manageable, but pain that changes your movement or grows session by session deserves attention.
Returning to sport with confidence
A safer return is based on function, not just the calendar. Before full training, you should be able to complete everyday movements without a limp or significant pain, have useful range of movement, and tolerate the strength and control demands relevant to your sport.
Test the injury gradually. A runner might start with a short flat jog before attempting intervals. A netball player may progress from straight-line running to controlled landing, side-to-side movement and then full training. A gym-goer can rebuild load with good technique before returning to maximal lifts.
There is always a trade-off between getting back quickly and giving the injury enough time to adapt. The fastest return is not necessarily the best return if it leads to another setback two weeks later. Targeted treatment, rehabilitation and sensible load management are usually more effective than alternating between total rest and full-intensity training.
